Bharat’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, spotlighted Bharat’s  commitment to women-led development initiatives during a special event organized by the Mission of Bharat. She emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving a fully developed Bharat, known as Viksit Bharat, by 2047, which requires the full and equal participation of women.

Kamboj highlighted Bharat’s leadership during its G20 presidency, under PM Modi’s guidance, which prioritized women’s empowerment globally. She underscored the importance of women taking the lead in development, citing Bharat’s efforts in guiding the G20 towards championing women’s progress.

Bharat’s presidency of the G20 saw significant strides with six impactful international conferences and 86 virtual meetings, aiming to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment on a global scale.

The goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 necessitates women’s full participation in various sectors. Kamboj emphasized the shift from women’s development to women-led development, where women actively contribute to shaping the nation’s socio-economic, political, and cultural landscape.

Bharat has implemented a multifaceted strategy to empower women, addressing areas such as health, safety, education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Initiatives like one-stop centers and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao program have benefited millions of women, contributing to improved gender equality indicators.

Bharat’s education system promotes gender-sensitive curriculum and enrollment parity in higher education. Notably, Bharat boasts one of the highest proportions of women enrolled in STEM disciplines globally.

Economic empowerment initiatives such as the JAM Trinity and self-help groups have transformed the rural economic landscape, with women holding a significant portion of accounts and benefiting from collateral-free loans.

The government’s focus on digital literacy, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship through various schemes has seen significant participation from women. Initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Grameen Digital Saksharta Abhyan and Mudra Yojana have empowered women entrepreneurs and enhanced their financial independence.

Bharat’s commitment to women’s health is evident through programs like the Asha program and the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which provide support to expectant mothers. The country has also made strides in reducing maternal mortality and increasing access to essential healthcare services.

Women’s political participation has been emphasized with over 14 lakh elected women representatives at the grassroots level. The recent passage of the women’s reservation bill further empowers women leaders from local governance to the national parliament.

Bharat’s civil aviation sector has seen a significant increase in women pilots, surpassing the global average. Despite these achievements, Kamboj reiterated India’s commitment to furthering women’s empowerment and realizing the dream of a developed India where women are self-empowered and independent decision-makers.
