Former US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by insulting Australia’s Ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd. In an exclusive interview with GB News’ Nigel Farage, Trump criticized Rudd, calling him “not the brightest bulb” and suggesting his tenure would be short if he remained hostile towards him. This comes after Rudd previously labeled Trump as “the most destructive president in history” and “a traitor to the West.”
During the interview, Farage raised questions about the AUKUS agreement and reminded Trump of Rudd’s criticisms against him. In response, Trump slammed Rudd as “nasty” and implied that his position as ambassador could be shortened if Trump were to be re-elected.
However, the Australian government swiftly came to Rudd’s defense, emphasizing his effectiveness as an ambassador. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong praised Rudd’s excellent job in advancing Australia’s interests in the United States and highlighted his significant contributions, particularly regarding the AUKUS agreement.
Wong also highlighted Rudd’s extensive experience as a former prime minister and foreign minister, suggesting that his capabilities extend to working closely with any US president elected by the American people.
The strained relationship between Rudd and Trump dates back to Rudd’s critical remarks about Trump’s presidency. Rudd had previously condemned Trump’s behavior following the 2020 election, labeling it as “unacceptable” and urging GOP leaders to encourage Trump to act responsibly.
Rudd’s appointment as ambassador in 2023 did not ease tensions, as his past criticisms of Trump remain accessible on social media platforms. Despite Trump’s recent remarks, the Australian government stands firm in its support for Rudd, reaffirming its commitment to retaining him as ambassador should Trump win the 2024 White House race.
