In the aftermath of Pakistan’s February 8 general elections, the United States has brought attention to irregularities in the electoral process. Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu is set to testify before a Congressional panel regarding the future of democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan relationship. Lu’s testimony follows a diplomatic incident involving a secret message sent by the former Pakistan Ambassador to the US, alleging a US conspiracy to oust the government.
Lu’s testimony highlighted concerns over restrictions on freedom of expression, electoral violence, attacks on media workers, and allegations of interference in the electoral process. He emphasized the importance of investigating claims of interference or fraud fully. Additionally, Lu noted instances of harassment against journalists and political leaders leading up to the elections.
Despite these challenges, Lu acknowledged positive aspects of the elections, including a high voter turnout of over 60 million Pakistanis, with significant participation from women and minority groups. He commended the record number of women candidates and the diversity among elected officials.
However, Lu also pointed out shortcomings in the electoral process, such as the barring of poll monitoring organizations from observing vote tabulation in many constituencies and the shutdown of mobile data services on election day, hindering access to social media.
In his testimony, Lu reaffirmed the US commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s democratic institutions, countering terrorist threats, and promoting economic stability. He emphasized the importance of economic reforms and private sector-led investments to address Pakistan’s mounting debt challenges.
The aftermath of the elections saw the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) forming a coalition government, despite allegations of vote rigging from Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. PTI claimed its mandate was stolen, but the coalition government was formed with the backing of independent candidates.
Lu’s testimony underscores the complexities surrounding Pakistan’s electoral process and the ongoing efforts to uphold democratic principles while addressing economic and security challenges.
