In a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday, it was announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to Bhutan has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions. The Prime Minister was scheduled to embark on a two-day visit to the neighboring country on March 21-22.
The decision to postpone the visit was made in light of the ongoing inclement weather affecting operations at Paro airport. The Ministry stated, “Due to ongoing inclement weather conditions over Paro airport, it has been mutually decided to postpone the State visit of Prime Minister to Bhutan on 21-22 March 2024. New dates are being worked out by the two sides through diplomatic channels.”
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan was intended to reinforce the longstanding tradition of high-level exchanges between New Delhi and Thimphu, emphasizing India’s Neighbourhood First Policy. During his planned visit, Prime Minister Modi was slated to hold audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, and His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan.
Additionally, discussions were scheduled between Prime Minister Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart, Tshering Tobgay. The Prime Minister was also set to inaugurate the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital, a project supported by the Indian government.
This postponement comes after Prime Minister Bhutan’s recent visit to India earlier this month, marking his first foreign trip since assuming office in January. During his stay, he engaged in various significant meetings including with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and leaders from various industries.
Further updates regarding the rescheduling of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan will be communicated through diplomatic channels.
