In a significant move aimed at bolstering bilateral ties, Bharat has pledged financial support of Rs. 10,000 crore to Bhutan over the next five years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this announcement during his visit to Bhutan, where he was awarded the Order of Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan’s highest honor. The aid underscores Bharat’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Bhutan amidst geopolitical developments, including China’s efforts to settle a border dispute with the Himalayan nation.

Modi emphasized Bharat’s unwavering support for Bhutan’s developmental goals, particularly its aspiration to become a high-income country by 2034. He highlighted plans to enhance cooperation in various sectors such as connectivity, infrastructure, trade, and energy. The financial assistance will contribute to Bhutan’s 13th five-year plan and further deepen the economic partnership between the two nations.

Bolstering Connectivity and Trade Infrastructure

During his visit, Modi outlined several initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity between Bharat and Bhutan. Plans include the construction of a new airport to improve air travel, the development of new rail links connecting regions in both countries, and the integration of waterways through the Brahmaputra River. These projects are poised to strengthen trade infrastructure and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people between the two nations.

Expanding Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

Bharat and Bhutan have also signed agreements to deepen cooperation across various sectors. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) encompass areas such as energy, digital connectivity, space, sports, and youth affairs. These agreements pave the way for collaborative efforts in renewable energy, agriculture, environment conservation, youth exchanges, and tourism, fostering comprehensive development and mutual benefit.

Acknowledging Shared Values and Heritage

Modi underscored the enduring friendship between Bharat and Bhutan, rooted in shared values and heritage, particularly Buddhism. He praised Bhutan’s visionary approach, exemplified by its policy of Gross National Happiness, and expressed Bharat’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s visionary projects such as the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative.

Ensuring Mutual Prosperity and Security

Both leaders reiterated the significance of the India-Bhutan partnership in ensuring mutual prosperity and security. Modi’s visit comes at a crucial juncture, with ongoing efforts by Bhutan and China to resolve their border dispute. India remains vigilant and committed to supporting Bhutan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, reaffirming its “Neighborhood First” policy and the enduring bond between the two nations.

Modi’s visit to Bhutan not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reinforces Bharat’s role as a reliable partner in the region. The financial assistance and collaborative initiatives underscore the depth of the relationship between India and Bhutan, rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation. As both nations look ahead, they remain committed to advancing their partnership across various domains for the collective benefit of their people.
