As the vote counting for the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union election progresses, the latest trends show a significant shift in favor of the Left, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) losing its initial lead.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Left is now leading in three out of four central panel positions, a reversal from the earlier dominance of the ABVP. The polling, which took place on Friday, saw a notable 73% voter turnout, marking the highest participation rate in 12 years.
After the counting of 4,743 ballots, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union election has witnessed a significant shift in dynamics, with the Left making notable gains as the vote count progresses.
In the fiercely contested presidential race, Dhananjay from the Left has emerged as the frontrunner, securing a substantial 1982 votes. His closest competitor, Umesh Chandra Ajmeera from ABVP, trails behind with 1597 votes. Other contenders such as Biswajit Minji from BAPSA and Aradhana Yadav from SCS have garnered 330 and 219 votes respectively. Notably, the option of ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) has received 148 votes, indicating a significant portion of voters expressing dissatisfaction with the available choices.
For the position of Vice President, Avijit Ghosh from the Left has garnered considerable support with 1741 votes, closely followed by Deepika Sharma from ABVP with 1369 votes. Mohamed Anas from BAPSA stands at 642 votes. Again, NOTA has received 249 votes in this category.
In the race for General Secretary, Priyanshi Arya, supported by BAPSA and Left, has taken a commanding lead with 2263 votes. Arjun Anand from ABVP follows with 1758 votes, while Farheen Zaidi from NSUI trails behind with 353 votes. The NOTA option has gained 217 votes.
The Joint Secretary position has seen a tight contest, with Govind Dangi from ABVP narrowly leading with 1912 votes, closely followed by Mo Sajid from the Left with 1907 votes. Rupak Kumar Singh from BAPSA has secured 485 votes. The NOTA option in this category has received 343 votes.
