In a significant development amidst the political landscape of West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a conversation with Rekha Patra, the BJP candidate from Basirhat and a survivor of the Sandeshkhali incident. Their discussion delved into crucial aspects of Patra’s campaign preparations, the burgeoning support for the BJP among the populace, and pertinent issues concerning the troubled region.
During the interaction, Prime Minister Modi hailed Rekha Patra as “Shakti Swaroopa,” recognizing her resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity. Patra, who has emerged as a prominent voice against alleged atrocities in Sandeshkhali, shared insights into the challenges faced by women in the area, emphasizing the urgency to address their plight.
“The situation in Sandeshkhali has been a cause for concern since 2011. If we had the freedom to vote without fear, such a scenario wouldn’t have persisted. My aim is to safeguard the dignity of the people here, and this fight will persist,” remarked Patra, reflecting on the tumultuous events unfolding in the region.
Sandeshkhali has been engulfed by a spate of mob violence in recent months, spurred by purported acts of aggression attributed to TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, his associates including Sibu Hazra, and other individuals.
Rekha Patra, hitherto leading a quiet life as a housewife in the Patrapara area of Sandeshkhali, rose to prominence as a vocal advocate against alleged sexual violence in the region. Her trajectory from anonymity to a central figure in the political discourse underscores the gravity of the challenges facing the region.
