In a significant move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah revealed on Tuesday a comprehensive seven-year plan by the Narendra Modi government aimed at gradually withdrawing Central troops from their operational duties in Jammu and Kashmir. This strategy entails entrusting the J&K police with exclusive control over maintaining law and order in the region.

According to Shah, the blueprint is already in motion, with efforts underway to bolster the capabilities of the J&K police force. This includes positioning them at the forefront of anti-terror operations, with Central forces assuming a supportive role. Shah emphasized the transformative progress witnessed within the J&K police, highlighting their enhanced credibility compared to previous perceptions held in Delhi.

The Home Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering the J&K police further. He affirmed plans for a gradual handover of law enforcement responsibilities, paving the way for Central troops to return to their barracks. Additionally, Shah hinted at a potential review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in light of the improving situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the forthcoming assembly elections in Kashmir, Shah affirmed adherence to the Supreme Court’s directive, ensuring completion before September 30. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to restore full democracy in the region, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s assurance delivered in Parliament.

Responding to inquiries regarding BJP’s electoral prospects in J&K, Shah clarified that the primary objective behind the transformative measures was not immediate political gain. Instead, the focus remains on fostering genuine representation and dismantling dynastic rule. Shah emphasized the government’s resolve to counter any pro-Pakistan rhetoric during the elections.

Shah categorically ruled out engaging in dialogue with separatist groups, opting instead to prioritize engagement with the youth of Kashmir. He underscored the government’s decisive actions against terrorist and separatist elements, including the banning of organizations and designation of individuals as terrorists. These measures have contributed to a significant reduction in incidents of stone-pelting and terrorism-related fatalities in the region.

In conclusion, Shah’s announcement signals a pivotal shift towards empowering local law enforcement agencies and restoring normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. The government’s commitment to democratic processes and counter-terrorism efforts remains unwavering, with a focus on fostering grassroots engagement and stability in the region.
