A police official confirmed that six Naxalites, one of whom was a woman cadre, were killed during an encounter with security personnel in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. The skirmish occurred in the dense jungles of Chikurbhatti and Pusbaka villages, within the jurisdiction of the Basaguda police station, as a joint team of security forces conducted an anti-Naxal operation, stated Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P.
The operation involved personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the elite CoBRA unit (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action). “Following the cessation of gunfire, the bodies of the six Naxalites, including a female member, were recovered from the site,” remarked Sundarraj P.
Despite the conclusion of the encounter, a search operation is still ongoing in the surrounding area, as security forces remain vigilant against any potential threats, Sundarraj P further added.
Bijapur district falls within the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, which is scheduled for elections in the initial phase on April 19. This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region ahead of the electoral process.
In a separate incident on March 23, two security personnel sustained injuries in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Dantewada, another Naxal stronghold. The explosion occurred during an anti-Naxal operation in the Kirandul police station area, as reported by the superintendent of police for the district. Such attacks highlight the persistent threat posed by Naxal insurgents in the region, despite ongoing efforts by security forces to maintain law and order.
