In a recent announcement, the Ministry of External Affairs revealed that Dinkar Asthana, an experienced Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1990 batch, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of Bharat to the Republic of The Gambia. Currently serving as the Ambassador of Bharat to the Republic of Senegal, Asthana will now also hold the position of High Commissioner to The Gambia, with his residence based in Dakar.
Asthana’s extensive career spans various diplomatic missions and roles, showcasing his proficiency and expertise in international affairs. Fluent in Hindi, English, German, and French, he has served in Bharatiya diplomatic missions in prominent cities such as Bonn, Bangkok, Colombo, and Mexico City. His diverse experience equips him well for the responsibilities of representing India’s interests in both Senegal and The Gambia.
During his tenure in New Delhi, Asthana contributed significantly across different divisions within the Ministry of External Affairs. He has served in key capacities in the Policy Planning, PAI (Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran), Protocol, and Multilateral Economic Relations Divisions, demonstrating his versatility and depth of understanding in various aspects of foreign policy.
Asthana’s contributions extend beyond traditional diplomatic roles. He served as the Deputy Director-General in the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and later held the position of Joint Secretary (SAARC, BIMSTEC & Border Connectivity). His expertise in developmental partnerships was further showcased during his tenure as Joint Secretary (Development Partnership Administration-II) and later as Additional Secretary (Development Partnership Administration).
With his wealth of experience and diplomatic acumen, Asthana is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Bharat’s relations with both Senegal and The Gambia. His appointment reflects Bharat’s commitment to enhancing diplomatic ties and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with nations across the globe.
