In southern Lebanon, eight people, including fighters from Hezbollah, were killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to security sources on Wednesday.
The strikes targeted the border village of Tair Harfa, where five people lost their lives. Shortly afterward, another strike hit a restaurant in the border town of Naqura, claiming at least three more lives, as reported by security sources and official Lebanese media.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, responded by launching dozens of rockets over the border into Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel early on Wednesday. This retaliation came after deadly Israeli airstrikes hit the village of Hebbariyeh in southern Lebanon the day before.
The recent airstrikes near two towns in northeast Lebanon resulted in the deaths of three Hezbollah militants, the armed Shi’ite Muslim group confirmed.
This exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah marks an escalation since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in Gaza in October. It represents the most significant escalation between the two adversaries since the month-long war in 2006.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has a long history, with tensions often flaring up along the border. The involvement of Iran, a key supporter of Hezbollah, adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
Efforts to ease tensions and prevent further escalation are crucial for the stability of the region. However, the latest exchange of fire underscores the ongoing challenges and risks of conflict between Israel and its adversaries in the region.
