The Torre Garisenda, a historic tower in Bologna, Italy, has been facing a crisis as it leans precariously, reminiscent of the famous Tower of Pisa. Standing at 48 meters tall, this medieval tower has been tilting since the 14th century, reaching a noticeable angle of four degrees. Concerns over its stability escalated last year when experts warned of a high risk of collapse.
To address these concerns and prevent the tower from crumbling, city officials have devised a plan inspired by the successful restoration of the Tower of Pisa. Bologna’s mayor, Matteo Lepore, announced that similar equipment used in shoring up the Tower of Pisa would be employed to stabilize the Garisenda tower. This includes the use of pylons, cables, and adapted steel scaffolding.
The implementation of this plan involves temporarily sealing off the surrounding streets while the necessary equipment is installed. The process is expected to take about six months and comes with an estimated cost of 19 million euros (around $20 million). Once completed, the tower’s masonry will undergo consolidation and restoration, including the application of lime-based mortar compatible with its original construction materials.
The technique involves connecting the erected pylons to scaffolding attached to the tower, then tightening cables to reduce stress levels at the tower’s base. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the tower’s stability and safety for years to come.
Despite being less renowned than the Tower of Pisa, the Torre Garisenda holds its own significance in Bologna’s history and attracts tourists due to its distinctive lean. Its literary fame, notably referenced in Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy,” adds to its cultural importance. Additionally, its proximity to the Torre degli Asinelli, another tourist attraction, further highlights its significance in Bologna’s architectural landscape.
The successful stabilization of the Tower of Pisa through international efforts in the 1990s serves as a testament to the effectiveness of this approach. With careful planning and execution, it is hoped that the Torre Garisenda will also be granted a second life, ensuring its preservation as a cherished landmark in Bologna.
