Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), remains in custody of the Enforcement Directorate, facing legal challenges. Recently, the Hindu Sena filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against him in the Delhi High Court, aiming to remove him from the Chief Minister post of Delhi.
The petition by the Hindu Sena urges the court to direct Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, to remove Arvind Kejriwal from his position as Chief Minister. Additionally, it calls for the central government to administer Delhi via LG rule.
In response to this latest development, AAP ministers and Kejriwal remain resolute in their stance that he will continue to govern Delhi even while in custody. They even passed a public welfare order during this period.
The PIL, presented by Hindu Sena president Vishnu Gupta, argues that the Constitution doesn’t anticipate a scenario where a Chief Minister can govern from judicial or police custody. It references Articles 163 and 164 of the Constitution, emphasizing the role of the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers in advising the Governor on governmental functions.
Since Kejriwal’s arrest on March 21, the PIL alleges that the functioning of the Delhi government hasn’t adhered to the constitutional framework. It highlights a deviation from the established scheme of governance.
Speculation Surrounding Sunita Kejriwal as Possible Successor
As the legal battles ensue, speculation mounts regarding Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, potentially taking over as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has hinted at this possibility several times, especially as Kejriwal’s custody continues.
Comparisons have been drawn between Sunita Kejriwal and Rabri Devi, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, suggesting that she might follow a similar path of assuming leadership after her husband. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made remarks insinuating this possibility, citing Sunita Kejriwal’s increasing public presence.
Earlier, Sunita Kejriwal initiated a WhatsApp campaign, rallying support for her husband amidst the legal turmoil he faces.
With uncertainties looming over Arvind Kejriwal’s continued custody and the legal proceedings, the political landscape in Delhi remains tense, with potential implications for the governance of the national capital.
