A Russian tourist named Nikita Koriaboksin suffered severe injuries in an alleged rhino attack while visiting Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP). The incident took place in the Kohra Range of the park on March 24, as confirmed by officials familiar with the matter.
According to forest officials, Koriaboksin arrived in Bharat on March 13 and reached Assam on March 16. Unfortunately, his belongings, including his mobile phone, were stolen during his journey from Kolkata to Guwahati.
On the morning of March 24, Koriaboksin was discovered near the Mora Diphlu River in an unconscious state. He was promptly rescued by a team and transported to a government hospital in Kohra for treatment.
After regaining consciousness, Koriaboksin informed the media about the attack. He revealed that he is a global researcher on rhinos and has previous experience working with them. He recounted inadvertently approaching a rhino calf in the forest, unaware of the presence of its mother nearby, leading to the attack and subsequent unconsciousness.
KNP director Sonali Ghosh stated that Koriaboksin had not notified park authorities prior to entering the forest and had not booked a safari for his tour. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between human visitors and wildlife within the park’s ecosystem, noting that Koriaboksin’s actions disrupted this balance.
Golaghat district forest officials expressed uncertainty regarding the alleged rhino attack, citing the relatively minor nature of Koriaboksin’s injuries. They expressed hope that the police investigation would uncover the truth behind the incident.
Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh confirmed that Koriaboksin is currently receiving medical treatment and assured that no legal actions would be taken against him, as no formal complaint had been lodged.
