A 26-year-old former IT employee, identified as Jassie Agarwal, has been apprehended by authorities in Bengaluru for her alleged involvement in a string of laptop thefts from paying guest (PG) accommodations. Jassie, who had relocated from Noida to Bengaluru for employment opportunities, found herself jobless amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reportedly, Jassie resorted to stealing laptops and other electronic gadgets from PGs, subsequently selling them on the black market in her hometown. Her modus operandi allegedly involved entering empty rooms within the PG premises and absconding with laptops left unattended for charging.
The case came to light after a resident of one of the PG accommodations filed a complaint with the police, citing the disappearance of numerous laptops. Prompted by the complaint, law enforcement authorities launched an investigation into the matter.
On March 26, police successfully apprehended Jassie and subsequently recovered a total of 24 laptops, estimated to be worth between Rs 10-15 lakh, from her possession. A senior police official revealed that Jassie’s criminal activities spanned across multiple localities, indicating a prolonged period of illicit operations.
Furthermore, the police have obtained CCTV footage capturing Jassie’s entries into various PGs, corroborating the allegations against her. The footage serves as crucial evidence in linking Jassie to the thefts and provides insights into her methods of operation.
The arrest of Jassie Agarwal marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the spate of laptop thefts plaguing PG accommodations in Bengaluru. Authorities have commended the efforts of the crime branch in swiftly apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen goods.
Residents of PG accommodations in Bengaluru are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their belongings against potential thefts. Law enforcement agencies advise individuals to secure their laptops and valuables when left unattended and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
As the case progresses, Jassie Agarwal is expected to face legal proceedings for her alleged involvement in the thefts, with charges likely to be pressed against her for theft and illicit trading of stolen goods. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining security measures, particularly in communal living spaces like PG accommodations, to prevent similar crimes in the future.
