In a recent development in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, four Naxalites were killed in a gun battle with security personnel. The encounter occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 2, near Lendra village, within the jurisdiction of Gangaloor police station. According to Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P, the exchange of fire began around 6 am during an anti-Naxal operation conducted by a joint team of security forces.
The operation involved personnel from various units, including the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force, Central Reserve Police Force, and the elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA). After the gunfire ceased, the bodies of the four Naxalites were recovered from the forest area, along with a light machine gun and other weapons.
This incident marks the latest in a series of encounters between security forces and Naxalites in the Bastar region. With these four fatalities, the total number of Naxalites killed in encounters in the region has reached 37. Bijapur district, which falls under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, is scheduled to go to polls in the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on April 19.
In a separate incident reported on Monday, April 1, two hardcore Naxalites were killed in an encounter with police in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district. The gunfight erupted in the Kerajhari forest area between 9 pm and 10 pm. Following a search operation, the bodies of the two Naxalites, identified as Sajanti alias Kranti and Raghu alias Sher Singh, were discovered. Additionally, authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle, a 12-bore rifle, and various daily use items from the site.
These encounters underscore the ongoing efforts of security forces to combat Naxalite insurgency in central Bharat, particularly in regions like Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
