Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, is spending his first days in Tihar Jail after being remanded to judicial custody until April 15th in the excise policy case. The AAP chief, known for his active political stance, experienced a restless first night in his 14X8 feet cell, pacing up and down before getting a few hours of sleep.
Upon arrival at Tihar Jail on Monday at 4 pm, Kejriwal underwent a medical examination before being escorted to his cell. Currently staying alone, he has been provided with necessary medications as advised by doctors due to his low sugar levels, which were below 50 at the time of arrival.
Kejriwal is lodged in jail number 2 and is scheduled to meet with his family. Throughout his first day, he was served tea in the afternoon and home-cooked food for dinner, as per reports from prison officials.
The authorities have equipped Kejriwal’s cell with a mattress, blankets, and two pillows. However, he slept on a cement platform during the night and was observed pacing across the cell. Despite experiencing low sugar levels in the morning, he is being provided with home-cooked meals for lunch and dinner until his health stabilizes.
In the morning, Kejriwal engaged in meditation and had tea accompanied by two biscuits. Outside his cell, two personnel from Tihar Jail Security and a jail warder have been deployed for his security. CCTV cameras monitor his activities, while a quick reaction team stands by near his cell, ensuring his safety.
Responding to his requests, the authorities provided Kejriwal with three books: Ramayana, Mahabharata, and ‘How Prime Ministers Decide’, along with his religious locket. According to prison rules, he has listed six people he wishes to meet, including his wife, children, private secretary, and AAP general secretary.
As Kejriwal adjusts to life in Tihar Jail, his supporters and opponents alike await further developments in his case and how it might impact his political career in the future.
