Arun Govil, widely recognized for his portrayal of Lord Ram in the iconic TV serial Ramayan, has entered the political arena. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate filed his nomination papers for the Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha seat, expressing his enthusiasm for this new chapter in his life. Born in Meerut, Govil considers this candidature as a ‘homecoming’, emphasizing the significance of his roots in the area.
Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and other party leaders, Govil submitted his nomination papers amidst a jubilant atmosphere. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and affection from the people of Meerut, describing it as the greatest blessings of his life. Govil exuded confidence, stating that he sees no obstacles in his path and believes that his candidacy will allow him to contribute positively to the community.
Before filing his nomination, Govil embarked on a roadshow accompanied by Maurya and other senior leaders, attracting a large crowd of supporters and well-wishers. The enthusiastic response from the people further bolstered his spirits as he traversed through different parts of the city, receiving warm greetings and adulation from the public.
In his affidavit, Govil disclosed details of his financial assets, showcasing transparency in his financial affairs. With no criminal record against him, Govil’s assets include a Mercedes car, gold jewelry, cash, bank savings, and investments in mutual funds and shares, highlighting his sound financial standing.
The BJP’s decision to field Govil for the Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha seat marks a shift from its previous candidate, Rajendra Agarwal, who held the position for three terms. Govil’s entry into politics adds a new dimension to the electoral landscape, pitting him against his main contender, Atul Pradhan, from the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance.
Govil’s journey from the small screen to politics reflects his evolution as a public figure, starting with his television debut in 1987 with ‘Vikram Betaal’ and achieving widespread fame with ‘Ramayan’. As the polling date for Meerut and surrounding constituencies approaches, all eyes are on Govil and his political aspirations, awaiting the outcome of this electoral contest.
