The Tihar jail authorities have denied claims by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has lost weight since his arrest, stating that his weight has remained steady at 65 kg. However, Delhi Minister Atishi countered this, asserting that Kejriwal’s weight was 69.5 kg when he was taken into custody by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED).
Upon his arrival at Tihar jail on April 1, 2024, Kejriwal underwent a medical examination by two doctors, who reported that all his vitals were normal. The jail authorities stated that Kejriwal’s weight has not changed since his arrival and that he has been receiving home-cooked food as ordered by the court. They also mentioned that all his medical parameters were within normal ranges.
Atishi continued to challenge the jail authorities’ statement, claiming that Kejriwal has lost 4.5 kg since his arrest. She expressed concern about his health, especially considering his severe diabetes. Atishi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of conspiring against Kejriwal and criticized them for jeopardizing his health by incarcerating him.
Arvind Kejriwal was taken into custody by the ED on Monday, following the conclusion of his custodial remand. The ED has accused him of being the “kingpin” in an alleged scam and has accused him of providing evasive responses and withholding relevant information during the investigation. This isn’t the first time Kejriwal has been in Tihar jail; he was previously held there in 2014 for refusing to pay bail in a defamation case filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.
The controversy surrounding Kejriwal’s weight loss has sparked further debate about his health and the circumstances of his detention. As the political tensions escalate, concerns about Kejriwal’s well-being continue to mount, with supporters expressing fears about the potential consequences of his incarceration on his health and political career.
