The earthquake resulted in significant loss of life and property. According to official reports, nine people have lost their lives, and over 800 individuals have been injured. Rescue efforts are underway to save the lives of 127 people who are trapped in various locations.
The casualties include hikers on the Dekarun Trail in Hualien’s Taroko National Park, as well as individuals involved in slope maintenance and mining activities. The earthquake caused multiple rockfalls, leading to transportation disruptions and structural damage to buildings.
Despite the challenges, Taiwan’s authorities have mobilized medical teams and emergency services to provide assistance. Hospitals, including Mennonite Christian Hospital, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, and Hualien Armed Forces General Hospital, are treating the injured.
Additionally, medical teams from neighboring regions, such as Yilan and Taitung, have been called upon to offer support. The National Fire Agency is actively engaged in rescue operations to free those trapped in tunnels and buildings.
