In a significant move, renowned boxer Vijender Singh has announced his decision to switch from the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The 38-year-old athlete, known for his remarkable achievements in boxing, including winning Bharat’s first Olympic medal in 2008, expressed that this transition was a carefully considered decision after establishing a connection with the BJP through a mutual acquaintance.
Singh, who had previously aligned with the Congress and was perceived to have a close relationship with Rahul Gandhi, shared his perspective on the shift, emphasizing that it wasn’t sudden. He stated that he had been observing certain developments for some time and felt that now was the right moment to make the move to the BJP.
The boxer, hailing from Haryana, highlighted his admiration for the central government’s support for athletes over the past decade. He expressed his desire to contribute to the improvement of conditions for sportspersons, particularly those from his home state, viewing his association with the BJP as an opportunity to make a positive difference in this regard.
Singh, who contested the South Delhi seat in the 2019 elections as a Congress candidate but faced defeat, acknowledged his defeat to the BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. Despite past criticisms of the BJP government and his support for athletes speaking out against misconduct, Singh expressed confidence in the BJP’s ability to address the concerns of sportspersons effectively.
Reflecting on his illustrious boxing career, which includes 14 bouts with an impressive record of 13 wins, Singh reaffirmed his commitment to campaign for the BJP as needed. His extensive accolades in both amateur and professional boxing, including gold at the 2010 Asian Games and multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships, attest to his experience and dedication to the sport.
In joining the BJP, Singh aims to utilize his platform to advocate for the welfare of athletes and contribute to enhancing opportunities for sports enthusiasts, particularly those from his home state. His decision to align with the BJP signifies a new chapter in his journey, driven by a desire to bring about positive change in the sporting community.
