The Kremlin issued a sharp rebuke on Friday, labeling French President Emmanuel Macron’s assertions that Russia is orchestrating a disinformation campaign to undermine the Paris Olympics as “unacceptable.”
Macron’s remarks, made on Thursday, suggested that Moscow was actively promoting the narrative that France was ill-equipped to host the Games, portraying it as a potential security risk.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Macron’s claims as “completely unsubstantiated accusations” during a press briefing on Friday, condemning them as “absolutely unacceptable behavior.” Peskov further criticized Western allegations against Russia, noting their lack of credible evidence.
Accusations of Russia’s involvement in disinformation campaigns and attempts to sow discord, particularly through online media platforms, have been longstanding concerns in the West. Macron’s remarks add to the ongoing tensions between Russia and Western nations.
In recent months, Paris has also accused Russia of manipulating public opinion regarding the Ukraine conflict, alleging that Moscow floods social media and pro-Kremlin outlets with narratives aimed at justifying its military actions.
The exchange underscores the deep-seated distrust between Russia and the West, highlighting the ongoing struggle over information warfare and propaganda in the digital age.
