The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a caution regarding the formation of heatwave conditions in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana on April 7 and 8. The IMD also predicts light to moderate rainfall across east, central, and peninsular Bharat during the same period.
The IMD has warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hail accompanying the rainfall over these regions from April 7 to 9. Additionally, it expects enhanced rainfall and thunderstorm activity in Northeast India for the next two days, followed by a decrease in intensity. Heatwave conditions are likely to persist over parts of peninsular India for the next two days before subsiding.
Affected Areas and Precautionary Measures
According to the IMD, the most affected areas include Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana. Authorities in Jharkhand have taken measures to mitigate the impact by extending polling hours, providing shaded structures, oral rehydration salts, lemon water, and deploying medical teams with ambulances.
Impact on Tamil Nadu and Odisha
Heatwave conditions have already hit Tamil Nadu, particularly in Karur and Dharmapuri districts, where temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius. In Odisha, eight people were hospitalized due to heat-related illnesses. No fatalities have been reported so far, but caution is advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
IMD Urges Weather Consideration in Election Planning
IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra emphasized the importance of considering weather conditions when planning for upcoming general elections. While specialized forecasts are being provided to assist authorities, no changes have been proposed to the timing of public rallies and voting. The IMD predicts a high number of heatwave days in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh during the election period.
As extreme weather events continue to impact various parts of Bharat, including heatwaves and thunderstorms, it is essential for both authorities and individuals to take necessary precautions. The IMD’s warnings and forecasts aim to assist in better preparation and response to such weather conditions, ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
