As the water crisis deepens in Bengaluru, residents of affluent societies have taken to the streets to protest against the acute shortage plaguing the IT hub. In a viral video capturing the discontent, residents of Shapoorji Pallonji Parkwest in Jagajeevanram Nagar can be seen chanting slogans demanding access to clean water.
The protest comes in response to recent measures announced by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), including a 10% cut in water supply to facilities and societies consuming between 40 lakh and 2 crore litres per day. This move has exacerbated the already dire situation, leaving residents frustrated and concerned about their basic water needs.
Adding to the woes, Karnataka grapples with over 3,000 borewells drying up, forcing reliance on costly RO water plants due to the scarcity of groundwater. The severity of the crisis has prompted calls for urgent action and sustainable solutions to address the escalating water scarcity in the region.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accuses the Congress government of exacerbating the crisis by allegedly diverting Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, concerns extend beyond Bengaluru, with Haryana facing similar challenges and Punjab witnessing a rapid depletion of groundwater levels. Rajasthan and Delhi have historically struggled with water scarcity, with the latter heavily reliant on neighboring states for its water requirements.
Amidst the escalating crisis, calls for a “Save water, save life” narrative gain momentum, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and education on sustainable water management practices. Advocates emphasize the effectiveness of ancient water systems and the importance of harnessing traditional wisdom to mitigate the current crisis and secure future water resources.
As the water crisis continues to unfold, stakeholders, policymakers, and citizens are urged to unite in a concerted effort to address the pressing issue and safeguard the precious resource for generations to come.
