In a recent interview with the Assam Tribune newspaper, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted significant improvements in the situation in Manipur, attributing them to the combined efforts of the central and state governments. The Prime Minister emphasized the dedicated allocation of resources and administrative efforts to address conflicts in the region, resulting in notable progress.
PM Modi recalled Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proactive engagement during his two-day visit to Manipur last year, where he conducted over 15 meetings with various stakeholders amidst heightened tensions. These efforts underscored the commitment to relief and rehabilitation measures, including the provision of financial assistance to those residing in shelter camps.
Addressing the grave concerns over crimes against women in Manipur, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable. He reiterated his assurance to the people of Manipur that the nation stands in solidarity with them and Parliament remains dedicated to resolving the challenges faced by the state.
The conflict in Manipur, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has led to significant loss of lives, with over 200 casualties reported since May 3 last year. While the Meiteis predominantly inhabit urban areas like Imphal, the Kukis have historically resided in the hilly regions, contributing to sporadic ethnic tensions.
The Prime Minister’s statements reflect a broader commitment to fostering peace and development in Manipur, with an emphasis on collaborative efforts between the central and state governments. Despite the challenges posed by ethnic conflicts, there is a collective resolve to address grievances and work towards a harmonious future for all residents of Manipur.
