Once again a New York appeals court judge refused former US President Donald Trump’s last proposal to delay the hush money criminal trial. On April 15, the court proceedings in the case are scheduled to take place.
Trump was trying to delay the historic trial to move the case out of Manhattan. His final trial to do so was foiled by Justice Lizbeth González of the state’s mid-level appeals court.
During an emergency hearing, Justice González gave out the judgement in which Trump’s lawyers were asked to postpone the trial while they sought a change of venue.
Trump’s team was looking for an emergency stay, a court order that would prevent the trial from starting on time.
Importantly, the hush money trial is the first of the former president’s four criminal indictments which are stated to go on the court’s floor.
It’s historic because this would be the first time a former American president will face a criminal trial. Trump’s Advocate Emil Bove argued that the 2024 Republican presidential candidate would face real potential prejudice as a defendant if the case goes on trial in Manhattan.
Trump has expressed in the past his intention to move the trial to Staten Island, the only New York City borough he won in 2016 and 2020.
Meanwhile, Steven Wu, appellate chief for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, noted that Judge Juan M. Merchan had already refused Trump’s appeals to move or delay the trial and described the requests as untimely.
