In a significant development, sources within the Union Home Ministry have revealed that the security cover for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has been elevated to the ‘Z’ category. This decision, reportedly based on intelligence inputs from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), underscores growing concerns about the safety of key government officials.
While specific details regarding the threat perception outlined in the IB’s report were not disclosed, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned Z category security for Kumar, indicating the seriousness of the perceived threats. Under the enhanced security protocols, a robust security apparatus has been put in place, comprising a total of 33 security personnel, including CRPF commandos, tasked with ensuring Kumar’s safety.
The security detail includes 10 armed static guards stationed at Kumar’s residence, six personal security officers (PSOs) providing round-the-clock protection, and 12 armed commandos working in shifts to accompany him. Additionally, two watchers per shift and three trained drivers are on standby to respond swiftly to any potential security risks.
This move to bolster Kumar’s security comes amidst escalating political tensions, particularly highlighted by opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress protesting against the Election Commission. The timing of the decision is noteworthy as it coincides with the preparations for the upcoming seven-phase Lok Sabha elections scheduled to commence on April 19.
Rajiv Kumar, a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch, assumed office as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on May 15, 2022, after previously serving as an election commissioner since September 1, 2020.
