In a recent development, aircraft technicians employed by Air India Engineering Services Ltd. (AIESL) have issued a strike notice slated for April 23. Their primary demand is for constructive dialogue with the company’s CEO to address longstanding grievances. AIESL, a public sector undertaking and subsidiary of AI Asset Holding Company Limited, specializes in maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for Air India and other airlines.
The technicians emphasized the urgent need for dialogue to avert disruptions to operations, citing management’s continued neglect in addressing their concerns. The decision to strike was prompted by unresolved issues impacting their rights, well-being, and professional growth within the company. Among their grievances, the lack of promotions over the past seven years stands out prominently.
One of the contentious points raised is the discrepancy in notice periods outlined in service letters. Technicians are required to serve notice periods ranging from one to three months, whereas certifying staff face a longer notice period of six months. Despite efforts by the All India Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Union (AIAMEU) to address this issue, management has not responded satisfactorily.
Furthermore, the technicians await promised salary hikes for those with over two years of experience, adding to their frustration. The letter to management also highlighted concerns regarding unilateral changes to uniform policies without prior consultation, indicating a broader dissatisfaction with decision-making processes within the company.
The strike notice follows previous attempts to engage with management, including discussions during a prior strike. Promises made by management to establish committees and address salary revision, career progression, and other issues within 90 days have reportedly gone unfulfilled, further eroding trust between employees and management.
As the April 23 strike deadline approaches, both sides face pressure to find a resolution that addresses the technicians’ grievances while minimizing disruptions to operations. The outcome of negotiations between AIESL management and the technicians’ union will be closely watched, with potential implications for labor relations within the aviation industry.
