In a recent court session, the Delhi Police presented arguments against former JNU student and activist Umar Khalid, alleging his involvement in a social media conspiracy related to the 2020 Delhi riots. The police contended that Khalid utilized his social media presence and connections with celebrities to propagate a narrative as part of a larger conspiracy.
According to the prosecution, Khalid’s interactions with influential figures, including actors, politicians, and activists, were aimed at amplifying his narrative on social media platforms. Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad highlighted Khalid’s communication with various individuals, sharing links from news portals critical of the Delhi Police.
In court, Khalid’s lawyer countered by presenting a video clip of Khalid’s father being interviewed by a news portal. Among those allegedly contacted by Khalid were Congress leader Jignesh Mewani, actors Pooja Bhatt, Swara Bhasker, Zeeshan Ayub, Sushant Singh, and politician Yogendra Yadav.
Furthermore, Khalid was said to be in close contact with news outlets like The Wire and Alt News. The prosecution also revealed Khalid’s alleged involvement in coordinating protests via WhatsApp groups.
The court session, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, adjourned after hearing arguments from both sides. The matter is set to resume on Wednesday, April 10.
Umar Khalid, along with several others, faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and various sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots, which resulted in 53 fatalities and over 700 injuries.
