Bharatiya universities have made remarkable strides in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world university rankings by subject. A total of 69 institutions from Bharat have been featured in the top 500 list, marking a notable 19.4% increase compared to the previous year’s entries.
Among the notable achievements, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta have secured positions among the top 50 globally for business and management studies. Additionally, Jawaharlal Nehru University has made its debut in development studies, clinching the 20th spot worldwide.
Jessica Turner, the CEO of QS, highlighted the importance of Bharat’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to achieve a 50% gross enrolment ratio by 2035. She emphasized that addressing the challenge of providing high-quality tertiary education amid surging demand is crucial.
The increased representation of Bharatiya programs across 55 subject rankings and five broad faculty areas is seen as a positive development. Turner pointed out that this reflects the positive impact of well-regulated private provision in enhancing Bharat’s higher education sector.
In the Asian region, Bharat stands second in the number of universities featured, with 69 institutions making the cut, trailing behind China. Moreover, Bharat holds the fourth position in the total number of ranked entries, with a total of 454.
The 12 Institutes of Eminence (IoE), including prestigious institutions like the University of Delhi and several Indian Institutes of Technology, have played a significant role. They contributed to 40% of the country’s total entries in the rankings and secured a majority of the top-100 positions across various disciplines.
Progress in Research Output
Bharat has also shown commendable progress in research. There has been a 20% improvement in Citations per Paper and a 16% growth in the International Research Network indicator. However, the country faces challenges in securing citations in premier global journals, with only 15% of its research cited in these publications between 2017 and 2021.
Despite these challenges, QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter acknowledged that Bharat is becoming a formidable player in the international academic community. The country’s research output surged by 54% from 2017 to 2022, positioning Bharat as the world’s fourth-largest producer of research, according to the rankings.
Subject Rankings and Contributions
QS utilizes four components for subject rankings: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and the H-index. The University of Delhi emerged with the most entries, followed closely by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP).
Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences achieved global recognition, securing the 24th spot in Dentistry with a perfect score of 100/100 in the H-Index metric. Additionally, six Bharatiya universities ranked among the world’s top 10 for employer reputation in specific subjects, according to feedback from employers surveyed by QS.
Overall, Bharat’s progress in the QS rankings underscores the growing stature of its higher education sector and research capabilities on the global stage. With continued efforts and investment, Bharat is poised to further enhance its position in the international academic community.
