During a joint news conference on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed the defensive nature of the military alliance between the United States and Japan. The statement came amidst growing apprehension regarding China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.
Biden emphasized that the discussions held during the state visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were centered on enhancing cooperation in defense and readiness. “Our alliance we have with Japan is purely defensive in nature. It’s a defensive alliance. And the things we discussed today improve our cooperation and are purely about defense and readiness,” stated Biden.
The remarks underscored the commitment of both nations to bolstering their defensive capabilities in response to evolving security challenges.
