In response to a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a significant step to address allegations of crimes in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The CBI has established a dedicated email address, [email protected], allowing villagers to report instances of land grabbing and related offenses. This initiative aims to facilitate the reporting process and ensure swift action against perpetrators.
The move follows a court-monitored CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, prompted by concerns raised by the local community. In compliance with the High Court’s order, the District Magistrate of North 24 Parganas has been urged to publicize the email address within the locality and issue notices in vernacular newspapers with wide circulation in the area.
A division bench of the Calcutta High Court, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, has instructed the CBI to compile a comprehensive report on the allegations by the next hearing scheduled for May 2. Additionally, the court has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive areas and LED street lights within Sandeshkhali, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the community.
The court’s decision underscores the importance of conducting an impartial inquiry to ensure justice and fair treatment for all stakeholders. It acknowledges the urgency of addressing various complaints and allegations effectively to alleviate the suffering of those affected. The directives issued by the court reflect a commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the High Court’s order, viewing it as a crucial step towards delivering justice to the victims. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh has criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, alleging indifference towards the plight of victims in Sandeshkhali. Chugh contends that the court’s decision exposes the true intentions of the TMC leadership and highlights the need for accountability.
The involvement of Shahjahan Sheikh, a key TMC figure, in allegations of sexual assault and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali has further intensified the controversy. Sheikh’s arrest in February, in connection with an assault on Enforcement Directorate officials, has raised concerns about his alleged involvement in criminal activities. The TMC’s decision to suspend Sheikh following his arrest underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the need for thorough investigation.
