In the latest development concerning Bharat-China relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of addressing the border situation urgently. In an interview with US magazine Newsweek, PM Modi underscored the necessity of resolving the prolonged border tension between the two nations.
Following PM Modi’s remarks, China responded by stating that it had taken note of the Prime Minister’s comments. Mao Ning, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, expressed China’s belief that maintaining sound and stable relations with Bharat serves the common interests of both countries. She emphasized that such relations are beneficial for regional peace and development. She said “China has noted the remarks by the prime minister”.
PM Modi reiterated the significance of stable relations between Bharat and China, highlighting their importance not only for the two countries but also for the entire region and the world. He stressed the urgency of addressing the ongoing border situation to normalize bilateral interactions.
Mao Ning, while acknowledging the border issue, asserted that it does not represent the entirety of Bharat-China relations. She emphasized the importance of managing the border situation properly while fostering other aspects of bilateral cooperation.
The Bharat-China border standoff began in 2020 after a violent clash at Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh. Despite 21 rounds of corps commander-level talks, the issue has persisted. Both sides have agreed to disengage from certain points, including Galwan Valley, Pangong Lake, Hot Springs, and Jianan Daban (Gogra).
Additionally, Bharat reportedly urges the Chinese Army to disengage from the Depsang and Demchok areas, further complicating the resolution process.
Mao Ning expressed hope that Bharat would cooperate with China to handle bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. She called for enhancing mutual trust, maintaining dialogue and cooperation, handling differences properly, and advancing bilateral relations on a “sound and stable track”.
