Residents of the national capital experienced relief from scorching temperatures on Saturday as light rainfall and strong winds swept through parts of Delhi, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has forecasted the possibility of more showers on Sunday, offering further respite from the heat.
On Saturday morning, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 39.3 degrees Celsius, but by 8:30 pm, the mercury had dropped significantly to around 24.2 degrees Celsius. The sudden drop in temperatures, ranging from six to ten degrees, was attributed to thunderstorms over parts of northwest India, including Delhi, between 4 pm and 8 pm. The Palam weather observatory reported 1 mm of rainfall till 5:30 pm.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Delhi, indicating the likelihood of light rainfall, thundershowers, and strong winds with speeds ranging from 35 to 45 kmph. The alert advises residents to be prepared for possible traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and damage to vulnerable structures. The maximum temperature on Sunday is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius.
Moving into Monday, the IMD forecasts continued chances of light rainfall or drizzle in the capital. However, temperatures are anticipated to rise again, reaching around 37 degrees Celsius by April 19. These weather patterns are attributed to a western disturbance prevailing over Iran and Afghanistan, combined with moisture influx from the Arabian Sea into northwest Bharat.
Overall, the IMD’s predictions offer hope for relief from the intense heatwave conditions in Delhi, with the prospect of more rainfall and cooler temperatures in the coming days. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to stay safe amidst the changing weather conditions.
