In an interview with news agency ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for its significant role in combating black money and corruption in Bharat over the past decade. Modi emphasized that the ED’s actions have targeted primarily non-political individuals involved in corruption.
Addressing allegations of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using central agencies to silence opposition voices, PM Modi refuted the claims, stating that 97% of ED cases are against individuals unrelated to politics. He highlighted that honest individuals have nothing to fear, contrasting them with those engaged in corruption who fear the consequences of their actions.
Modi underscored that most ED cases target drug mafias and individuals involved in creating benami assets, rather than political figures. He lauded the agency’s performance during his tenure, noting a significant increase in asset attachments and cash recoveries compared to previous years.
Highlighting the ED’s achievements, PM Modi stated that during his tenure, assets worth Rs 1 lakh crore have been attached, compared to Rs 5,000 crore before 2014. Moreover, cash recoveries have risen substantially, indicating the agency’s effectiveness in combating corruption.
Expressing his conviction that corruption has severely impacted the nation, Modi stressed the importance of fighting against it with full force. He reiterated the necessity of tackling corruption to ensure the country’s progress and development.
Responding to concerns about alleged influence over central agencies, PM Modi clarified that his government did not introduce any laws empowering agencies like the ED and CBI. He emphasized the need for level playing field and highlighted his government’s efforts in bringing reforms, particularly in the Election Commission.
In light of recent events, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the ED, opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc parties approached the Election Commission of India, alleging misuse of central agencies by the ruling BJP to suppress opposition voices. Several prominent opposition figures, including Kejriwal and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, are currently detained on corruption charges.
Overall, Prime Minister Modi’s statements underscore the government’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring transparency in governance, while also addressing concerns regarding the impartiality of central agencies.
