According to statements from the Kremlin on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for all parties involved in the Middle East to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation. Putin emphasized the potentially catastrophic consequences of any new confrontation in the region.
In a phone call with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Putin discussed what the Kremlin described as “retaliatory measures taken by Iran” following recent events. Iran launched drones and missiles at Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate, resulting in casualties among the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Putin attributed the current instability in the Middle East to the unresolved conflict between Palestinians and Israel. He expressed hope that all sides would exhibit reasonable restraint to prevent further escalation.
Raisi, in turn, emphasized that Iran’s actions were forced and limited, underscoring Tehran’s disinterest in further escalating tensions. Both leaders acknowledged the root cause of the events in the Middle East as the unresolved Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The Kremlin reiterated Russia and Iran’s principled stance in favor of an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, alleviating the humanitarian crisis, and facilitating a political and diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
The call comes amid heightened concerns among top U.S. generals about the growing partnerships between Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, posing significant challenges to the United States.
Notably, Iran’s provision of surface-to-surface ballistic missiles and drones to Russia, which have been utilized in Ukraine, highlights the deepening cooperation between the two nations. Russia’s diplomatic engagements with both Iran and Arab leaders such as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman underscore its role in regional affairs.
Putin’s call for restraint underscores the delicate balance of power and the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation in Middle East region.
