Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, welcomed Special Representative Roza Otunbayeva. Roza Otunbayeva leads the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), for discussions on the current state of affairs in Afghanistan.
Jaishankar expressed pleasure at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of exchanging viewpoints on the situation.
Jaishankar highlighted Bharat’s ongoing assistance efforts for Afghanistan, including the provision of essential supplies such as wheat, medicines, pesticides, and school materials. He underscored the collaborative role of UN agencies in these endeavors, recognizing their partnership in addressing the country’s pressing needs.
In January, Bharat further demonstrated its support by supplying 40,000 liters of Malathion, a pesticide crucial for combating the locust infestation, through the Chabahar port. This initiative reflects Bharat’s commitment to aiding Afghanistan in overcoming challenges and fostering stability.
Meanwhile, UNAMA’s Roza Otunbayeva reiterated concerns about the plight of Afghan women and girls. She later emphasized the urgent need to dismantle restrictions that hinder women’s participation and exacerbate poverty and isolation.
Otunbayeva’s remarks coincide with International Women’s Solidarity Day, urging the Taliban to abolish prohibitions and promote gender equality.
The international community has echoed these sentiments, condemning the Taliban’s crackdown on women’s rights. Despite initial assurances of a moderate stance, the Taliban’s actions, including banning girls from education beyond the sixth grade and enforcing strict dress codes, underscore their regressive policies.
Efforts to empower Afghan women and girls are crucial for achieving sustainable peace and prosperity. Coordinated actions are essential to remove barriers, foster inclusivity, and safeguard women’s rights.
As global leaders rally support for Afghan women, the focus remains on ensuring their active participation in shaping the nation’s future.
In these ongoing challenges, Bharat’s engagement with UNAMA and other stakeholders underscores its commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s development and stability. The discussions between Jaishankar and Otunbayeva reflect the shared goal of addressing pressing issues and fostering a brighter future for Afghanistan.
