Bharat is set to deliver the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and launchers to the Philippines on Friday, marking a significant milestone in their defense partnership. The deal, valued at nearly $375 million, was signed two years ago, aimed at equipping the Philippine Marines with three batteries of these advanced missiles.
Officials familiar with the matter revealed that Bharatiya aircraft will transport the consignment to the Southeast Asian country. The delivery, delayed due to the absence of a non-disclosure agreement between the two nations, underscores Bharat’s growing role as a major exporter of defense hardware.
The January 2022 agreement between Bharat and the Philippines is viewed as a significant boost to New Delhi’s ambitions in the global defense market. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by Bharat and Russia, is renowned for its supersonic speed and precision, making it a coveted asset for military forces worldwide.
Bharat’s defense export target of ₹35,000 crore by 2024-25 reflects its commitment to expanding its presence in the international defense arena. Recent data from the defense ministry revealed a substantial 32.5% growth in defense exports last fiscal year, surpassing the ₹21,000-crore milestone for the first time.
The surge in defense exports is attributed to the concerted efforts of both the private sector and defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs). Private firms accounted for approximately 60% of the exports, while DPSUs contributed the remaining 40%.
Bharat’s defense export portfolio encompasses a wide array of military hardware, including missiles, artillery guns, rockets, armored vehicles, offshore patrol vessels, personal protective gear, radar systems, surveillance technology, and ammunition. With approximately 100 local firms involved in defense exports, India currently serves around 85 countries with its military products.
The successful delivery of BrahMos missiles to the Philippines underscores Bharat’s growing stature as a reliable supplier of cutting-edge defense technology. The collaboration between the two nations not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reinforces Bharat’s position as a key player in the global defense market.
