Amid the major fire that broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site in Delhi on Sunday evening, Smoke continues to engulf citizens of Delhi, trapping them in a “gas chamber environment”.
Officials attribute the blaze to gas buildup within the dumping yard, with no reported casualties. Delhi Fire Services deployed eight fire engines to combat the flames.
Speaking to the media, one resident laments the lack of government attention to their plight, while another resident highlights the distress caused to the community, recalling casualties from a previous fire.
The incident underscores the ongoing environmental challenges faced by Delhi residents and highlights the need for swift government action to address waste management issues and mitigate health risks.
While local residents blamed CM Arvind Kejriwal for neglecting the issue and allowing the landfill to worsen, the BJP criticized the AAP-led government for failing to fulfill its promise to clear the landfill by December 2022. However, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi assured control over the situation.
Despite efforts by the Delhi Fire Service to control the blaze, residents complained of throat irritation and coughing from the smoke, a recurring issue since the 1990s.
