A fresh round of voting is currently underway at 11 polling stations in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency on Monday. Following disturbances, including gunfire and clashes, during Friday’s voting, the election commission nullified the results and scheduled a revote for affected areas. The Chief Electoral Officer confirmed on Saturday that polling would recommence at these 11 stations on April 22.
The designated polling stations for revoting include Moirangkampu Sajeb and Thongam Leikai in Khurai constituency, four in Kshetrigao, and one in Thongju in Imphal East district, along with three in Uripok and one in Konthoujam in Imphal West district.
Manipur, plagued by instances of firing, intimidation, and destruction of Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs, as well as allegations of booth capturing, witnessed a 72 per cent voter turnout during the Lok Sabha elections.
In response to these disruptions, the Congress party lodged complaints, asserting election irregularities and calling for revotes at 47 polling stations. Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra specifically highlighted concerns, seeking a revote at 36 stations in Inner Manipur and 11 in Outer Manipur.
