The Siachen Glacier, located in the eastern Karakoram range within the Himalayas, poses extreme challenges to soldiers, including frostbite and harsh weather conditions.
The Siachen Glacier holds historical importance for the Bharatiya Army, marking the 40th year of its presence there on April 13. Over the years, the army has enhanced its operational capabilities, largely attributed to improved infrastructure in the region. “Operation Meghdoot,” initiated on April 13, 1984, enabled the Bharatiya Army to gain full control over the glacier, securing vital strategic interests.

Captain Shiva Chauhan, belonging to the Army’s Corps of Engineers, was deployed to a frontline post in the Siachen Glacier in January of the previous year. This marked the historic first operational deployment of a female Army officer on this pivotal battlefield, underscoring Bharat’s commitment to gender inclusivity in the armed forces.
The visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Siachen reaffirms Bharat’s unwavering support for its armed forces and underscores the country’s appreciation for their sacrifices in safeguarding the country’s borders and sovereignty.
