Amidst mounting allegations of medical neglect towards Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Beniwal, Director General of Tihar Jail, emphasized today that the prison operates within established medical protocols and under the purview of the court. The remarks come in the wake of accusations from Kejriwal’s party regarding a purported conspiracy against him, including claims of being denied insulin while in custody.
In an interview, Mr. Beniwal addressed concerns raised by Kejriwal’s party, stating that Tihar Jail provides medical care to its approximately 1,000 diabetic inmates based on recommendations from senior doctors, including those from prestigious institutions like AIIMS and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
“We are accustomed to such pressures and handle them as a part of our routine,” Mr. Beniwal remarked, reflecting on the scrutiny faced by the prison administration.
Kejriwal, who has been in custody since March 21 in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, has alleged deprivation of insulin and has sought permission for a video call consultation with a private practitioner, a request that has been denied by the special court overseeing the case. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party staged protests outside Tihar Jail, amplifying the issue.
Dismissing the allegations as “baseless,” Mr. Beniwal reiterated the commitment of Tihar Jail to comply with court directives. He emphasized that the prison authorities have provided comprehensive responses to the allegations in court proceedings and abide by the court’s decisions.
Refuting the notion of foul play within the jail premises, Mr. Beniwal posed a rhetorical question, questioning the plausibility of administering “slow poison” within the facility.Calling the allegations “baseless”, Mr Beniwal said they will follow the instructions of the court.
“Whatever allegations AAP is making, we have answered them very well in court,” Mr Beniwal said. “Whatever questions the court has asked us, we have also answered them very well. We all accept what the court says. Why are they making all these allegations? Only he should answer,” he said.
“Do you think slow poison can be given in jail? Do you yourself think this is possible?” Mr Beniwal added.
Highlighting the standard medical procedures followed under the jail manual, Mr. Beniwal elucidated that in cases of serious illnesses, consultations are sought from external referral hospitals such as AIIMS and RML. He emphasized that this process is standard for all prisoners and is not subject to categorization based on individual status.
“As per our existing protocols, we rely on expert medical advice from external referral hospitals to ensure the well-being of all inmates,” Mr. Beniwal affirmed, underscoring the jail’s commitment to providing necessary medical care to all prisoners under its jurisdiction.
