In a scathing rebuke directed at Congress leader P Chidambaram for his critique of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared the government’s unwavering stance on Tuesday. Shah, in an exclusive interview with ANI, unleashed a blistering attack on Congress’ alleged history of appeasement politics and called for a shift towards a development-oriented agenda.
Accusing the Congress party of utilizing appeasement tactics since the 1960s to secure electoral victories, Shah underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on development since 2014. “Congress is grappling with the challenge of contesting elections based on development, resulting in continuous electoral defeats. Their inclination towards appeasement politics persists,” Shah asserted.
Refuting Chidambaram’s criticism of the CAA, Shah asserted that the Act posed no threat to anyone’s citizenship and accused the Congress of misleading the public for electoral gains. “BJP stands by its principles, committed to justice without succumbing to appeasement,” Shah affirmed.
Addressing Chidambaram’s assertion of repealing the CAA and the three new criminal laws proposed by the BJP government if the INDIA bloc ascends to power, Shah dismissed the possibility, highlighting Chidambaram’s previous involvement in discussions regarding the legislation. He lauded the proposed criminal laws as pivotal in modernizing India’s justice system.
Chidambaram’s remarks, made during a press conference in Thiruvananthipuram on April 21, have ignited a fierce political exchange between the ruling BJP and the Congress party, underscoring the deep ideological divide over the contentious CAA and related legislation.
