A Delhi court has decided to extend the judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, along with K Kavitha, a leader of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Chanpreet Singh, who is alleged to be the fund manager for Aam Aadmi Party’s Goa elections.
Extension until May 7, is in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. The court made this decision during a virtual conference where all three accused were present.
The judicial custody of Kavitha, specifically in the case related to the Delhi excise policy, was also extended till May 7. This decision follows a plea rejection from Arvind Kejriwal, seeking 15 minutes of daily medical consultation with his doctor in the presence of his wife, Sunita Kejriwal.
Instead, the court directed Tihar jail authorities to ensure necessary medical treatment for Kejriwal and, if needed, to consult a medical board constituted by AIIMS, including specialists in endocrinology and diabetology.
In recent, Kejriwal’s blood sugar level spiked, leading to his administration of a “low dose” of insulin on the advice of AIIMS doctors. The news of this medical intervention was welcomed by AAP, who attributed it to the blessings of Hanuman Jayanti. According to Tihar jail officials, Kejriwal received two units of low-dose insulin on Monday evening.
Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 after the Delhi High Court denied him protection from coercive action by the central agency.
Similarly, K Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is in judicial custody in both ED and CBI cases. The CBI had arrested her from Tihar Jail in connection with the alleged scam, while the ED arrested her in a money laundering case.
Chanpreet Singh, alleged to be the individual managing Aam Aadmi Party’s funds for the 2022 Goa assembly elections, was arrested by the ED. The funds were reportedly procured through alleged bribes in the Delhi excise policy, linking him to the ongoing case.
The extensions of judicial custody signify a prolonged legal battle for the accused, with further process expected in the coming days as investigations continue into the alleged money laundering and corruption cases.
