In Taiwan, an earthquakes series shook the eastern region of Hualien, causing concern among residents. The tremors, numbering over 200, occurred late on Monday and early Tuesday. Despite the frequency of aftershocks, there were no reports of injuries or major damage.
This news came as a relief to many, especially after a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area on April 3, claiming 17 lives. Since then, the region has experienced more than 1,000 aftershocks, keeping residents on edge.
The tremors also affected other parts of Taiwan, including the capital city of Taipei. Buildings in northern, eastern, and western Taiwan trembled throughout the night due to the magnitude 6.3 earthquake.
These quakes were characterized as shallow, amplifying their impact on structures and residents alike. Despite the widespread shaking, there were no reports of significant damage in these areas as well.
One significant reassurance came from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a major chipmaker with operations in the region. TSMC confirmed that its operations remained unaffected by the recent seismic activity.
This announcement provided further relief amid concerns about potential disruptions to the country’s vital technology industry.
The earthquakes served as a reminder of Taiwan’s vulnerability to seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
Taiwan, situated near the convergence of several tectonic plates, experiences frequent seismic events, ranging from minor tremors to major earthquakes.
