During a Hyderabad forum, Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, stirred debate by questioning Bharat’s historical approach towards Israel. He pointed out that despite Bharat’s official recognition of Israel in 1950, it wasn’t until 1992 that Bharat established a full-fledged embassy and appointed an ambassador to the country.
Jaishankar raised concerns about the role of faith and vote-bank politics in shaping India’s foreign policy, highlighting the long-standing reluctance to fully engage with Israel until relatively recently. His remarks suggest a reevaluation of past policies and a call for a more pragmatic approach in international relations.
Expressing Concern Over Civilian Deaths in Hamas-Israel Conflict
Jaishankar’s comments come in the wake of escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas. Last month, during the Hamas-Israel conflict, he expressed concern over civilian casualties, emphasizing the importance of upholding international humanitarian law.
He condemned terrorism while acknowledging the need to avoid disproportionate responses that result in civilian death. His statement reflects Bharat’s stance on conflicts involving civilian populations and underscores the importance of adherence to international norms and laws.

Bharat’s Solidarity with Israel Amidst Conflict
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reaffirmed Bharat’s support for Israel during times of conflict. Last year, amidst Hamas’ coordinated attacks on Israel, Modi expressed solidarity with the Jewish nation during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He condemned terrorism in all its forms and reiterated Bharat’s unwavering support for Israel’s security and sovereignty. Modi’s statement underscores the close bilateral relationship between Bharat and Israel and Bharat’s firm stance against terrorism.
Jaishankar’s remarks and Modi’s statements highlight Bharat’s evolving foreign policy approach towards Israel and its commitment to principles of international law and solidarity with allies during times of crisis.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, Bharat’s stance towards Israel and other key partners may undergo further scrutiny and adaptation to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the region.
