Recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee found herself embroiled in controversy following her allegations against the Calcutta High Court. The court had canceled the recruitment of over 23,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, citing illegality.
However, Banerjee went on record accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of influencing the court’s decision, alleging that it had been “bought.”
The situation escalated when a group of lawyers urged the court to take suo motu cognisance of Banerjee’s remarks, claiming that they were aimed at undermining the judiciary. A senior advocate associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] even filed an affidavit highlighting Banerjee’s persistent attempts to discredit the Calcutta High Court.
The court, upon reviewing media reports of Banerjee’s statements, granted permission to file criminal contempt petitions against her. This move comes after two other lawyers called for action against Banerjee, signaling a growing backlash against the Chief Minister’s accusations.
Banerjee’s allegations reached a new height during a public rally where she claimed that the BJP had not only bought the High Court but also influenced other key institutions like the CBI, NIA, BSF, and CAPF. She expressed her hope for justice from the Supreme Court, as the Bengal government had already approached the apex court.
Banerjee in her campaign vehemently urged voters not to support the BJP, CPI (M), or Congress, particularly emphasizing the BJP’s stance on the judgment. The BJP had supported the court’s decision, viewing it as evidence of the TMC government’s corruption in teacher recruitment.
However, amidst the political tug-of-war, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) expressed concerns over the judgment’s implications, citing the potential loss of thousands of jobs. Protesters in Kolkata echoed these sentiments, arguing that many of the recruits were innocent victims caught in the crossfire of political maneuvering.
As the controversy deepens, tensions between the TMC and BJP continue to escalate, with each side vehemently defending its position while accusing the other of foul play. The future of thousands of job seekers remains uncertain, overshadowed by the shadow of political controversy and judicial scrutiny.
