The second phase of Lok Sabha polls took place on Friday with nearly 61 percent turnout recorded until 7 pm. This phase covered 88 constituencies in 13 states and union territories.
Notably, polling was conducted for the first time in 102 villages in the Bastar division, marking a significant milestone in democratic participation.
Despite the scorching weather conditions, voters from various walks of life enthusiastically participated in the electoral process. From newlyweds to senior citizens, tribals to IT professionals, and people with disabilities (PwDs) to women and youngsters, everyone queued up at polling stations to cast their votes.
The Election Commission ensured a smooth and peaceful polling process across all states and union territories.
To maintain law and order and create a conducive environment for voters, stringent security measures were implemented. Webcasting was conducted in over one lakh polling stations to monitor the proceedings.
In addition, polling time was extended in certain areas to accommodate voters amidst hot weather conditions, with special arrangements such as shade, drinking water, medical kits, and fans provided for their convenience.
Traditional attire added a colorful touch to the electoral process, with voters and polling officials dressing up to celebrate the occasion. In Sikar, Rajasthan, women voters braved the heat in their traditional attire, while in Varuna constituency, Karnataka, polling staff welcomed voters dressed in traditional attire.
Voters from 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker parliamentary constituencies in Chhattisgarh cast their votes in polling booths set up within their villages for the first time in a Lok Sabha Election. This initiative aimed to enhance accessibility and convenience for villagers, reflecting the Election Commission’s commitment to inclusive participation.
Special efforts were made to facilitate voting among marginalized groups such as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), elderly citizens, young voters, women, and transgender individuals.
Prominent personalities, including cricketing legends Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, and Javagal Srinath, were seen casting their votes in Bengaluru, advocating for the importance of electoral participation, especially among the youth.
The Lok Sabha polls are being conducted in seven phases until June 1, with votes scheduled to be counted on June 4. As the democratic process continues, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral exercise that reflects the will of the people.
