Saturday, April 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a rally in Goa, gearing up for the third phase of the Lok Sabha Elections in 2024.
The rally will take place in Vasco town, situated in South Goa, one of the two parliamentary constituencies in the coastal state. PM Modi will lend his support to BJP candidates contesting in the upcoming elections.
Notably, entrepreneur Pallavi Dempo will be representing the BJP in South Goa. In the North Goa constituency, the contest is between sitting MP and Union Minister Shripad Naik from the BJP and former Union Minister Ramakant Khalap from the Congress.
Preparations for PM Modi’s rally are in full swing, with Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant overseeing arrangements at the venue located at BITS Pilani ground near Vasco town. Senior BJP leaders, including party general secretary B L Santhosh, have also convened to review preparations.
Chief Minister Sawant anticipates a massive turnout, estimating that more than 50,000 people will attend the rally. Expressing confidence in BJP’s prospects, he stated that the party is poised to secure victory in both Lok Sabha seats in Goa, citing overwhelming responses from voters.
Sawant emphasized the significance of citizen participation in realizing the vision of a developed Bharat, attributing progress to the leadership of PM Modi and the policies of the central government. He reiterated the commitment towards achieving a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India) by re-electing the government at the Centre.
In the midst of the electoral fervor, controversy arose surrounding a statement made by Congress candidate Viriato Fernandes, contesting from South Goa. Fernandes sparked outrage by suggesting that the Bharatiya Constitution was “forced upon” Goa following its liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961.
Responding, BJP MLA Sankalp Amonkar filed a police complaint against Fernandes under the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act, 1971. Amonkar alleged that Fernandes’ remarks disrespected the Constitution, constituting a violation of the Act.
As Goa braces for political rallies and electoral battles, the stage is set for a heated contest between parties vying for the mandate of the people in the Lok Sabha Elections.
