Russian officials issued stern warnings to the West on Sunday, threatening significant retaliation if frozen Russian assets are seized.
Amid tensions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that Russia would not surrender seized territories for the return of assets.
She emphasized Russia’s firm stance against Western “thievery” and vowed a severe response to any such actions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for legal challenges and Moscow’s commitment to defending its interests.
As part of sanctions in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the West has frozen around $300 billion of Russian assets, primarily in European financial institutions. Peskov also noted the presence of significant Western investments in Russia, indicating potential targets for Moscow’s retaliatory measures.
The statements reflect escalating tensions between Russia and the West, raising concerns about the prospect of further economic and diplomatic confrontations.
